Elizabeth Torrance died in 1894 aged 30 in Howie’s Row, Hurlford. Archibald Torrance and his family moved back to Newmilns to live with his mother at 32 Brown St. Ann Torrance Head Widow 60 China Merchant Newmilns, Ayrshire, Scotland Archibald Torrance Son Widower 31 Painter Newmilns, Ayrshire, Scotland William Shields - Single 24 Joiner Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland William Torrance Grandson - 10 Scholar Hurlford, Ayrshire, Scotland Annie Torrance Granddaughter - 8 Scholar Hurlford, Ayrshire, Scotland James Torrance Grandson - 6 Scholar Hurlford, Ayrshire, Scotland I believe James Torrance to be Oliver Torrance. In the 1911 Census James has no occupation aged 17 and is described as 'feeble-minded'. Verbal evidence (WTB) stated that 'Jimmy' had meningitis as a child. James appears in census returns but he can't have been born between the birth of his brother Oliver and the death of his mother. Apart from census returns I can't find evidence of his birth. Oliver does not appear in the 1911 census, James does. Oliver only appears in the records when he died aged 29. 'No Occupation' is stated on Oliver’s death certificate.
