1901 Census William Houston Head Mar 62 Colliery Oversman Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland Annie Houston Wife Mar 62 New Cumnock, Ayr, Scotland Annie Houston Dau 12 Scholar Kilmarnock, Ayrshire In this Census Annie Houston (Annie Torrance Houston) is erroneously listed as ‘daughter’ when she was the grand-daughter of William and Annie. William Houston died, aged 64, on 22 Mar 1904 of broncho pneumonia and cardiac failure. 1911 Census Seven years later the widowed 74 year old Annie Houston was living with the family of her daughter Annie (b 18 Dec 1870) at 11 Woodstock Place, Kilmarnock. Annie had married Robert Hamilton Walker on 6 Dec 1892 in Hurlford. The adopted grand-daughter Annie Torrance Houston is also living with the family. Her name was recorded as Annie Torrance. It turns out that Robert and family emigrated to Canada at some time before 1923. This initially seemed unlikely but there is plenty of proof. For example, their daughter Elizabeth Walker married William Granville on 20 Jun 1923 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Robert and Annie Walker lived in or around Niagara Falls, Ontario, until their deaths. When did the family emigrate? Did Annie Houston travel with them or did she die in Scotland? Work continues.
