In the 1911 Census 1 Ropner Terrace is occupied by John Thomas
Johnson, grocer. George Johnson has moved to the outskirts of
Stockton-on-Tees and opened a shop on a new housing estate,
Grange Estate.
John T Johnson went on to be a Stockton-on-Tees Councillor.
He was married to Emma Jane Layton and they had two children. At the time of the 1939
Registration he was living at Aulbro House, The Avenue and was described as a Grocer and Sub-
postmaster and a Special Constable. He died in 1961 in Cleveland, aged 87.
A Google map image from 2017 shows that
1 Ropner Terrance is now a Chinese takeaway.
The general store on the right is owned by A & A
Johnson. Is there any connection?
This postcard was published by J T Johnson of the Newtown Post Office. Ropner Terrace still stands along
Bishopton Road, just beyond the station and the overhead bridge. The car is emerging from Bedford Street.
