James and Agnes Mitchell and their daughter were living in 5 Grey St, Newmilns, at the times of the 1881 and 1891 censuses. James Mitchell died, aged 81, on 28 Nov 1891. In the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses William Shields was living with Anne Torrance as her adopted son in Brown St, Newmilns. This was just two or three hundred yards away from Grey St where his mother was living. Grey St was part of what is now High St. William Shields married Margaret Hanning Reid on 11 Jun 1909 in Kilmarnock. They had two children : William Young Torrance Shields b 6 May 1910 Stanley Robert Shields b 17 Dec 1913 d 1996
