William Croel Torrance (1837-1872) William Croel Torrance was born on 11 Jan 1837 in Newmilns in Loudoun Parish, the son of Archibald Torrance, shoemaker, and his wife Margaret (née Reid). Margaret’s mother’s maiden name was Croel or Crewell which is the origin of the middle name, sometimes spelt Croal. William was living with his parents at the times of the 1841 and 1851 Censuses in Union St and Nelson St respectively. William Croel Torrance married Anne Young on 31 Dec 1858 in Galston. William is described as a cotton weaver, as was his father. William and Anne had their first child, Archibald, who was born on 12 Mar 1859 in Greenholm. Tragically he died, aged 2, on 30 Mar 1861 just one week before the 1861 Census in a part of Glasgow. William is described as a handloom dealer.
