When the handloom weaving trade prospered in the 19th century, restrictions on the Loudoun side of the river led to the expansion of Newmilns into Greenholm in Galston Parish. Fues were made available by the Browns of Lanfine and by 1870 houses had spread from Bridgend to the railway station. This view is from the west end, at the bridge over Pate's Mill lade.
One of the most noted buildings in Greenholm was Pate's Mill, demolished in 1977, and seen here in 1902. It was the first place to meet the eye of visitors or returning natives as they came down the Station Brae. The mill wheel, which was within the building, was driven by the lade which ran behind the houses on the south side of Brown Street.
