John Rowland John Rowland was born on 11 Feb 1825 and baptised on 20 Feb 1825 in the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary, Highfield Street, Liverpool. The sponsors were Thomas Rowland and Elizabeth Hutchinson. In the 1841 Census he was living in Maguire St with his parents Henry and Elizabeth and three siblings. At age 16 he was working as a stone mason. His mother died in 1844. His father remarried and died in 1845. John had moved to the Saddleworth area, on the Yorkshire- Lancashire boarder around this time. He married Maria Thorpe on 16 Dec 1850 and a few months later they were living at Shaw Hall which an area very close to the Huddersfield Canal alongside a road from Ashton to Uppermill. Maria was one of six children of Joseph Thorpe and his wife Martha. At the time of the 1841 Census they were living at Mann’s Wharf on the Huddersfield Canal, very close to Shaw Hall (see next map).
