On 23 Jun 1848 the 36-year old William McRae married Janet Scott in Old Cumnock. She was the 23-year old daughter of John Scott, a dairyman and his wife Janet (née Gairdner). 1851 Census Willam and Janet McRae had what I believe to be their only daughter, Janet Gairdner McRae, in 1856. ‘Gairdner’ was the maiden name of the child’s maternal grandmother, Janet Gairdner who was married to John Scott. 1861 Census 1871 Census
