The Cyclopedia’s account of a family of nine male and two female children has not taken into account the child, Hugh, who appears to have died at birth or shortly thereafter. The records of two Hugh McCrae births are shown at the bottom of this page. No death record has been found. The Bruce family tree continues on the following pages through the off-spring of Robert McCrae. The two sons named Hugh have rather coincidental birth dates (apart from the year) and one might wonder if some clerical error has occurred. John and Jean’s last child, Sarah, was born in 1791. All the children were born in Old Cumnock. John McCrae who worked as an agricultural labourer died ca 1827 according to dozens of on-line trees who all seem to be repeating the same info, the source of which I haven’t yet found.
