1851 Census
In 1851 Anne McCrea was working as a house servant on the 300 acre Lowesmuir Farm which was approximately 2 miles north of Path Head. The
farm was run by John and Elizabeth McCowan. They had five children and five servants (three labourers and two house servants).
Anne’s grandmother was still living in Path Head (or Pathead) with three unmarried daughters. Anne McKerow (aged 66) was recorded as a pauper.
Mother and daughters were trying to earn a living as sewers.

Next door but one was another family of Hyslops. Any connection is yet to be discovered.
Ann McKerrow died on 11 May 1860 having suffered from chronic bronchitis for six months. Though her married name was Hyslop, having been
married, apparently, to John Hyslop and having ten children with him, she seems to have reverted to her maiden name after his death in 1833. The
death registration was reported by her daughter Elizabeth Hyslop who made her mark on the record. Ann was described as having been married to
a shepherd.
Five years after working as a farm servant in New Cumnock Anne McCrae/McCray had moved 25 miles north to Dreghorn where she met and
married William Houston in 1856.
