1871 Census With Beniston Pit closed William moved a few miles north and in 1871 he, and his expanded family, gave their address as Crosslee Railway Station, Darluith. He described himself as a contractor. Crosslee Railway Station was on the Bridge of Weir line. The Bridge of Weir Railway was an independent railway company that built a line from Johnstone to Bridge of Weir. Opened in 21 April 1864 the line was taken over on 1 August 1865 by the Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR) and formed the base of a line that extended to Greenock, giving the G&SWR access to the harbour facilities there, competing with the rival Caledonian Railway. The two platform station went through a remarkable number of name changes, an indication it wasn’t close to anywhere in particular. The names were Windyhill (1871), Crosslee (1871-1874), Houston (1874-1926), Houston and Crosslee (1926-1973), and Houston again until the station closed in 1973. The Greenock branch, as it had become, declined substantially, and the line closed in January 1983.
