What happened to Agnes? Agnes Beaton/Houston married William Carle, a coal miner, on 26 Apr 1889, in Hurlford. William Carle had previously been married to Mary Shannon. They had married on 1 Jun 1866 in Kilmarnock when both were about 20 years of age. Mary was apparently a multiply convicted felon. William and Mary had three children : Elizabeth Ferguson Carle was born in 1868 and died that same year aged 5 months. David Carle was born in 1869 and died of gastric fever in 1872. Mary gave birth prematurely to an un-named daughter in Kilmarnock Prison, Bank St, on 20 Apr 1872. The daughter lived for just 8 hours. After a tragic life Mary Shannon/Carle died in 1877, aged just 31/32. Agnes Beaton/Houston was 33/34 when she married William Carle and he was nine years older. The name Carle was often recorded as Carrol. After their marriage William and Agnes Carle had three children : Lizzie (b 1892), Jessie (b 1895) and William Beaton Carle (b 1896). Agnes Beaton/Houston/Carle died in 1916 in Hurlford. William Carle died in 1920.
