Adam and Agnes married in Hurlford on 31 Dec 1875.
Tragically, their daughter died just two months later at the age of 8 months.
The couple’s second child Annie McRae Houston was born 11 Apr 1877 in Selfish Hill. Locally this area was also known as Cadgers Row. During the
18th Century it is recorded that Ayrshire was plagued by itinerant people mainly from Ireland who would “cadge” and steal anything they could get
their hands on. It was a major problem in those days and it seems likely that a number of them would have set encampment at Hurlford at a point
known as Cadgers Row.
