Peter Johnson married Mary Thompson in Holy Trinity Church, Stockton-on-Tees, on 8 Oct 1843. She was the daughter of William Thompson and,
according to later censuses, was born in 1813 in Marton, Yorkshire. Mary was twenty years younger than Peter.
In the 1820s Marton was described as a parish in the wapentake and
liberty of Langbargh; 7 miles N. of Stokesley. A village ever rendered
important by being the birthplace of the great navigator Captain James
Cook.
Marton is now a dormitory suburb of Middlesbrough due to extensive
building in the 1950s onwards. Historically part of the North Riding of
Yorkshire, the parish of Marton originally extended down to the River Tees,
but with the expansion of Middlesbrough, the parish became progressively
smaller.
Peter and Mary had a daughter, Jane, in early 1845. Later censuses give her birth-place as Egglescliffe and Yarm. Egglescliffe is a village which sits on
top of a hill overlooking and across the River Tees from Yarm. Jane Johnson underwent a private baptism in Egglescliffe on 28 May 1845. Peter was
described at this time as a labourer.
