1871 Census In the 1871 Census (taken on Sunday 2nd April) William and Janet Howat were still living in Galston with their three youngest children Grace (18), Janet (15) and Hugh (14) who was working as a coal miner. Grace must have been pregnant with the child of William Bruce (21) who was living nearby with his grandmother Marion Bruce. A daughter Janet Bruce was born on 2 Sep 1871. Though the address has changed since the 1861 Census only the name of Howie’s Square changed, not the location. William Howat died in 1878 with the information witnessed by his son Hugh Howat. The details all fit in with information presented previously except for the father being named James where I believe him to be William. The profession is correct and, as Hugh is unlikely to have ever have met his grandfather, this could be a mistake on his part.
