1851 Census
By 1851 the family had moved to Howie’s Square in Galston. There were six children.
I have not found the birth records of Euphemia, Agnes, William or Mary Howat but in most cases there is alternative evidence of parentage.
Euphemia : Parentage is confirmed on her marriage registration to James Brown (28 Jul 1882) and her death certificate (10 Sep 1902).
Agnes : No confirmation apart from 1851 Census. She did not appear on 1861 Census.
William : A coal miner who died on the 24 Feb 1867 in Galston.
Mary : She married George Wilson on 30 Dec 1870 in Galston and died on 29 Apr 1934 in Galston.
Euphemia Howat had two illegitimate children : Jeanie Wilson Howat (b 3 Mar 1872) and John Howat (b 28 Sep 1878). The 1881 Census shows these
children living with their 63 year old widowed grand-mother Janet Howat in Ironwork Sqaure, Galston. Also in the household was the married Grace
Bruce (née Howat) and three of her children. Grace’s husband William Bruce was not present on the night of the Census. Euphemia married in 1882
and her husband James Brown, coal miner, died two years later. Euphemia then married Thomas Caddis in 1898.
Lots of evidence has been used to confirm the life details of the eleven children of William Howat and Janet Findlay which are summarised below :

* The evidence for Hugh’s existence can no longer be found though I have a note that the on-line IGI recorded his death in 1841.
The birth certificate of Janet Howat is very detailed. It states that Janet is her mother’s tenth child and that there were 5 boys and 1 girl living and 2 boys
and 1 girl deceased. There appears to be a mix up here as some of these figures are completely the wrong way around.
There would have been 5 girls living (Lillias, Jean, Euphemia, Mary, Grace) and 1 boy (William). The 2 boys and 1 girl deceased would have been James,
Hugh and presumably Agnes.
