Charles Kellitt Harlington (1895 - 1987) Charles Kellitt Harlington was the third son of Alma Harlington to bear those names. The other two children having died aged 4 months and just less than 5 years. The middle name was the surname of Alma Harlington’s first wife, Annie Elizabeth Kellitt, though this Charles’ mother was Alma’s second wide Emma Pyrah. In the 1901 and 1911 Censuses he was living with his father’s family in 84 Percy St, Goole. In 1911, aged 15, he was a general labourer. Charles Harlington enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment (the Green Howards), aged 19 years and 6 months on 9 Nov 1914. Regimental number 18448). According to his military records Charles was 5ft 7in tall and weighed 159 lbs. His chest when fully expanded measured 39½in. He had a fair complexion with blue eyes and brown hair. He stated that he was living at home, unmarried, had never been in prison, had never been an apprentice and that he was a labourer. He joined at Pontefract on 10 Nov 1914 as a Private. Charles Harlington made some progress up the promotion ladder becoming an unpaid Lance Corporal on 14 Jul 1916; this later became a paid position 7 Apr 1917. He was promoted to ?? Corporal on 1 Sep 1917 and Lance Sergeant 5 Jan 1918. He saw service in three major theatres of war : 5 months in the Dardonelles, 6 months in Egypt and 1 yr 8 months in France (at locations circled white on map). He survived the war but at considerable cost.
