By 1903 Alma Harlington’s work as a ship-smith (a blacksmith who worked on ships) was evidently unprofitable and he had run up debts. He was able to avoid bankruptcy by entering into a deed of arrangement with his creditors to pay 7s 6d (37½p) in the £1. In the UK, a Deed of Arrangement is a written legal agreement made between a person or organization that owes money and the people or organizations that they owe money to. The agreement states how the debts are to be paid. Allowing for inflation £233 in 1903 is the equivalent of £19,807 in 2020 and £87 would be £7396.
