They appear to have been evacuated 80 miles north to the very rural Stonegrave, near Helmsley, where they were living with Anthony Brydon, a farm labourer, and his wife Marjorie (née Green). Majorie was William Leslie Green’s younger sister and the children’s aunt. Although officially listed '100% disabled' he joined the National Benzole Co as a representative based in Sheffield. On the outbreak of the Second World War all major oil companies (Anglo-American Oil, National Benzole, Shell- Mex, BP, Trinidad Leasseholds) were amalgamated to form the Petroleum Board. Despite suffering continual problems from war wounds William Leslie Green raised a company of Local Defence Volunteers (LDV) subsequently embodied in the Home Guard, seen here on parade at the Lumley Street Depot of the Petroleum Board, Sheffield.
