The four children, who would have ranged in age from 3 to 16, are not listed with their parents. They appear to
have been evacuated 80 miles north to the very rural Stonegrave, near Helmsley, where they were living with
Anthony Brydon, a farm labourer, and his wife Marjorie (née Green). Majorie was William Leslie Green’s younger
sister and the children’s aunt.
Although officially listed '100% disabled' he joined the National Benzole Co as a representative based in Sheffield.
On the outbreak of the Second World War all major oil companies (Anglo-American Oil, National Benzole, Shell-
Mex, BP, Trinidad Leasseholds) were amalgamated to form the Petroleum Board. Despite suffering continual
problems from war wounds William Leslie Green raised a company of Local Defence Volunteers (LDV)
subsequently embodied in the Home Guard, seen here on parade at the Lumley Street Depot of the Petroleum
Board, Sheffield.
