Missing from the Cambridge home of Edward and Maria Green in the 1901 Census were their son William Edward Green who had begun a journey
north and daughter Bessie Scott Green. Bessie had married Richard Arthur Royall in 1892 and had been busy producing children. By the time of the
1911 Census she had had ten children, nine of whom were still alive - and her parents were living with the family!
1911 Census
Richard Royall was a self-employed plasterer who lived at 21 River Side. This is a 4 bedroomed end terrace house. With four adults and eight children it
might have been a little cramped. Living with the Royall family were Edward and Maria Green, now aged 71 and 74. Edward must have retired as he is
described as 'formerly waiter'. In 2020 21 River Side is valued at between £615K-£750K according to an on-line estate agent. The high price is a
reflection of its situation with a fantastic view onto the River Cam and the redevelopment of the area.
21 River Side (shown above) may be an expensive property today
but the occupants would have got a little damp in 2001 when the
River Cam overflowed its banks (left).
