Edward “Teddie” Green (1839 - 1917) Edward Green was the son of William Green and his first wife Elizabeth (née Wootton). He was born in 1839 and baptised on 28 Jul 1839 in the parish of St Botolph, Cambridge. He was living with his parents in Mill Lane, Cambridge, at the time of the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Censuses. In 1861, when he was 21, he is described as having 'No Occupation'. He probably moved from Mill Lane around this time when his mother and two much younger siblings died and his father remarried. St Botolph’s Church is a Grade I listed building dating from the 14th Century and dedicated to Botolph, a seventh-century abbot in East Anglia, who is a patron saint of travellers. The church was built by the south gate of medieval Cambridge, through which travellers from the south and west entered the town. It is located at the intersection of Trumpington Street and Silver Street; just yards from Mill Lane. The parish extends west, over the River Cam, into Newnham and includes several colleges. Edward Green married Maria Morehen Scott on 22 Sep 1863 in Cambridge. Maria Morehen Scott was the daughter of Thomas Scott, a carpenter/builder, and Maria Morehen. Maria Morehen, the bride’s mother, was widowed in 1837 shortly after the birth of Maria, their fourth child. Just prior to daughter Maria’s marriage the widowed Maria and her daughter can be found living at 23 Burleigh Street, Cambridge (1861 Census). The elder Maria is working as a nurse and her daughter Maria Morehen Scott, aged 25, is described as a milliner. At the time of their marriage Edward Green and Maria Morehen Scott both gave their address as Burleigh St. Edward’s occupation appears to be Commercial ….?…. . Burleigh St is in the central area of Cambridge and has now been redeveloped as a pedestrianised shopping area with most of the older houses demolished. 23 Burleigh St was less than a mile from where Edward Green was living in Mill Lane in 1861.
