Lucy Ellis (1877 - 1943) Lucy Ellis was born on 21 Sep 1877 in Twywell, Northamptonshire and was living at home in Twywell with her parents, John and Mary Ann Ellis and two sisters Annie and Ada at the time of the 1881 Census. 1891 Census At the age of 12 Lucy left home to work as a general domestic servant for William Wilson, a shoe manufacturer, who lived at 8 Garfield St, Kettering. 1901 Census By 1901 Lucy had moved to London to work as a domestic cook. He became a Doctor of Medicine and an Assistant Surgeon at St Andrew's in 1853. He gained a commission as a prize at the Middlesex Hospital. As a member of the Madras Medical Service he served with the Madras Fusiliers during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), and later with 9th Madras Native Infantry. He gained the rank of surgeon in 1865, retiring in 1868 as a deputy surgeon general. He died in London on 6 February 1908. In 2018 88 Oxford Gardens (9 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 4 reception rooms) sold for £7,850,000. Lucy Ellis must have left the employ of William Rean sometime before his death in 1908 and returned north. She married William Ross Smith in Q2 1906 in Thrapston. He was 29 and she was 28. William was a railway guard who was born in Grafham, Huntingdonshire.
