The birth certificate of Marion Irvine Bruce has an interesting corrected error. Grace’s maiden name seems to have been given as 'Hendrie' before being
corrected to 'Howat'.
William and Grace Bruce produced their sixth child, Mary Bruce, a little over a year later. William Bruce, coal miner, was named as the father and
informant. Another error appears on this record with the mother’s surname being given as 'Howie' instead of 'Howat'. The birth location was Sornhill Toll.
Another three children, Jeanie, Willam and Hugh were born at addresses given as Sornhill, Riccarton or Sornhill, Hurlford between 1885 and 1889 and their
father William Bruce died there, aged 39, on 8th October 1890. The registration informant was William’s eldest son Robert Bruce.
Just over six months later, the 1891 Census records Grace (Mrs William Bruce), aged 37, as a widow keeping house in Sornhill Village for herself and eight
children whose ages ranged from 19 to 1. Only the oldest son Robert Bruce, aged 17, appeared to be earning a wage as a coal miner. The youngest child
was Hugh Bruce whose story we will now follow.
Birth : Mary Bruce - 12 Oct 1882
