1871 Census - Mary Mathieson/Crichton Alexander and Mary Crichton were hard to find in the 1871 Census as their surname had been recorded as Crighton. Living with them they now had Mary’s illegitimate daughter Margaret and a further five children. Alexander had given up coal mining and was trying his hand as a butcher. Alexander Crichton featured in the local newspaper for less than admirable reasons.
