Mary Mathieson, who had two children with the mysterious William Henry, went on to marry Alexander Crichton in Howie’s Land, Galston, on 3 August 1860. Their first child Janet Crichton was born just two months after the marriage on 30 September 1860. They had at least seven children together. 1861 Census - Mary Mathieson/Crichton The following year, in 1861, Alexander and Mary Crichton (formerly Mathieson) were living in Orchard Street, Galston. Margaret Henry (aged 8) is with them and is listed as Alexander Crichton’s step-daughter. Also present in 1861 was Mary and Alex’s daughter Janet Crichton. Her age is given as 6, but this should be 6 months as Janet Crichton was born in Howies Land, Galston, just seven weeks after her parents married.
