The two eldest sons both enlisted in the 9th Battalion of the Essex Regiment and died in the early years of World War I in Flanders.
9th (Service) Battalion, Essex Regiment was formed in Warley in August 1914 then moved to Shorncliffe as part of the 35th Brigade of the 12th Division.
In March 1915 they moved to Blenheim Barracks, Aldershot.
On 31 May 1915 the battalion mobilised for war and landed at Boulogne and engaged in various actions on the Western Front including :
1915 : The Battle of Loos.
1916 : The Battle of Albert, The Battle of Pozieres, The Battle of Le Transloy.
